Young Writers

Kenyon Review Workshops

Rachael serves as an instructor at the Kenyon Review Young Writers Summer Residential Workshop in Ohio. There, she works with high school students to write, revise, and present their creative writing.

She has also taught a Winter Workshop for Kenyon titled, “Ekphrastic Explorations: Using Visual Art to Generate Great Writing.” In these online workshops, she worked with high school students to explore, write, and revise writing inspired by other forms of art. For inspiration, students read work from Kenyon Review issues along with pieces by writers such as Hisham Matar, Teju Cole, Aisha Sabatini Sloan, and Zadie Smith.

Young Authors Academy

In addition to teaching university courses at Southern Miss, Rachael also coordinates a summer creative writing camp for kids called the Young Authors Academy. In this camp, kids from the Hattiesburg area come to campus to read and write poems and stories. This camp is taught by current graduate students from the Center for Writers and includes field trips to the Southern Miss Museum of Art, the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, and the M. M. Roberts Stadium. The summer camp culminates with a public reading and reception. Each participant also receives an anthology featuring work by each camper.
